    Melting the pains away – the best alpine & Finnish way – in Frutt Lodge & Spa.

    So, I’ve become a spa person. (Or maybe just old, though won’t admit anything.) A good, clean, quiet spa (and sauna – more than else a good sauna) kinda person. To balance the life well, as I’m also more frequently the runner-skier-biker semi-physical worker kinda person.

    And slowly – yet with a great intention – I have become a Swiss spa person. (Very slowly really, because Swiss spas require good Swiss budget. Which I luckily have now.)

    Finally literally even, since earlier this week  I tested the Berglauf Engelberg track (9km up – and down – with 1200m+ vertical) resulting in pretty (read very) sore legs in real need of sauna and spa. Yet first, I joined my friends on their Via Alpina multi day hike from Engelberg to Interlaken.  But since I didn’t have time for as long hike as my friends, I took the chance, skipped the Tannensee – Meiringen stage and directed my sore legs to the Melchsee-Frutt direction after a hike from Engelberg to Engstlenalp and night in the cozy, Wes Anderson’ish hotel Engtslenalp (more of which some other time). Knowing there would be a pretty good spa to try get a good cure for my pains.

    And oh boy, did it do it. Very well indeed.

    In addition to offering effective and lasting cure to my sore legs as a spa (they were like newborns on my way back home) Frutt Spa (in the Frutt Lodge & Spa complex by lake Melchsee in Central Switzerland, not far from Lucerne) also seems (read feels) to have the best Finnish sauna I have ever stepped into (funny how the Swiss seem to know very well how to do good things of wood –saunas included).

    Offering unique alpine wellness, the frutt spa pool and the saunas were topped with good wood (including the smell and carvings) and cows crazing outside the big windows opening to the lake. Lucky me (for once) also got the saunas and spa almost all to myself on this day – note how you can visit the spa as external day quest only by request, 40,- for an admission– and could walk away with mind and body relaxed, simply cured and amazed by the experience.

    Next time gonna come by bike though. And book a room. Because after sauna like this, a good sleep or easy lazy roll is way better than the long hike I did to get back home with the last lifts in the Engelberg side.

    Ps. Note how a spa or hotel visit in here can be combined nicely with a multi day hiking, mountain biking or trail running tour from/to Engelberg, Meiringen or Stöckalp direction (only for a limited period in summer you can drive to Melchsee-Frutt).

    And while Frutt Lodge & Spa is a very stylish place, it’s still true to the alpine lifestyle. So, in here hiking boots and mountain bikes are better accessory choices than stilettos and Teslas.

  • My Lapland Ritual

    One of those. My favourite Lapland rituals. xc-skiing. Skating style.

    It’s good to be back in Lapland and on cross-country tracks. Even though, I clearly notice that I haven’t trained enough for the season of one of the toughest, if not toughest, sports in world.

    It requires the endurance of ultrarunning, the sprint speed of mountain biking, the mental toughness of open water swimming, and, at times, can put skiers in situations of real exposure.––– To be successful, athletes must maintain unparalleled cardiovascular fitness in addition to muscular strength and coordination.

    Yes, it’s tough, and if not born skis attached to your feet like I kinda did, it’s better to get a good amount of (technique) lessons and good gear before gliding away.

    Nevertheless, it’s nice and more than worth it. And humbling.

    Exercise, meditation (kind of) and fresh air (one of the purest in the world). All in one.  And when it’s crispy cold, sauna afterward melts.

    On top of it all, you really earn your beer skiing nordic.

  • Theme of 2019 – Wellness

    It’s been pretty few days, with the snow eventually coming, in loads. I’ve fought the urge to go skiing – yes I said loads and it would be so fluffy in Eastern Switzerland and Austria– as there is a lot to do and plan and rest these days. And more than else rest. For my theme of 2019 will be wellness, I just decided. Rest included.

    Wellness. The new luxury. The kind of wellness (from my personal point of view) where you carefully consider what you need to feel good, do good and be good. And then, you do that, get that and make that. Simple as that. Or maybe not.

    And to help with this simple or not so simple thing, I listed down few things I am going to focus on more carefully this year. Here you go:

    Food – More veggies, less processed food. I’m not into taking any extra stress nor spending a lot of time and energy thinking food, but I do try to eat and drink more of what keeps me healthy, makes me feel good and what tastes good. Going vegan would be trendy, yet I will just try to eat a bit better. For myself and the planet. In 2019 happy and wellbeing me me will also continue to be Arctic Warrior ambassador, so the superfoods are guaranteed and maybe some more tips coming up in the blog too.

    Love – Not going into detail in here, but 2019 I will continue on the path I chose in 2018. Which is about being grateful for what one has and to not take anything for granted. By now I also know how one has to work (hard) for the best things too. When one works hard with a good focus, knowing what one wants, it most likely leads to something very good. And what’s better than as much love as possible?

    Work – Funnily enough, in 2019 I want to do more and I want to do better. Especially professionally. I want to use my skills and knowledge to make a change,  but I also wanna challenge myself, gain new skills and strengthen the already existing ones. And yes, I also want to have (more) work to get money to pay the rent and support the wellness goals.

    Wellbeing (physically and mentally) – Health is wealth and for me (though I do think this goes to everyone – humans were made to move and do things with their whole body) physical activity, especially outdoors is what keeps me going in a good way and which keeps my body and mind feeling and being well. For me, it’s a way to train the body but also to disconnect from all the hustle and puzzle of modern everyday life, to focus fully on the trail ahead, the snow under my skis and the mountains to conquer. Preferably followed by some yoga, sauna and spa time. And good long sleep.

    Travel – As a tourism researcher from my education, I do acknowledge the good effects of good travel. For wellbeing as well. And this year again, I want to travel and travel good  – gain as many transformative experiences as possible, see new places and step out of my comfort zone – but also to travel to feel absolutely, totally, extremely comfortable.

    So please 2019, show me as many outdoor adventures, spa hotels and foreign places as possible.
