    Balance for better.

    I have come to a conclusion. One of the most annoying things when working remotely/freelancing – as the one and only hustler of your business – is how you work alone most of the time. Which I have done a lot the past year. Worked and studied alone from my home office – or from a corner of a café – and talked more to my plants than any living person.  (Though the plants are living surprisingly well – I am impressed by my seemingly developed skills in this field.)

    And even as an introverted Finn who has no problems being a bit hermit sometimes, I have noted how much one can still miss the daily teamwork and slack. Because the plants are unfortunately very unresponsive, although pretty and living.

    And the same goes to mountains. They are nice to experience solo as well (just see the pic from summer of 2016 below, one happy kid biking solo around Grindelwald, or read this longer story about solo hiking) – and there are many unresponsive things to talk to there too.

    But the best is always when the solo endeavours and adventures with others go about 50/50. Enough me time, and enough doing together. Balance for better like the hashtag for the day goes.

    Soo in other words, you may invite me to work in your office any day. I would be more than happy to jump in. And for the mountain adventures and this international women’s day, I would like to especially give a shout out to all the amazing women who go solo or together, invite others along (in person or through writing, pics, videos, art etc), and simply do badass things.

    And to the people, men and women, who give women space. Space to be where we want to be, to do what we want to do, and to say what we want to say.

    It might not always be the most brilliant and pretty thing what comes out of that, but I do think world is way more exciting that way.

    Like on that hot summer day from which the selfie below is. When I decided to bike up to Grosse Scheideggen from Grindelwald, and all the way to First and Bachalpsee, and back down to Grindelwald. With my heavy not really made for this kind of things bike.

    And when the best was after it all, down in Grindelwald. Where I heard the question: “Did you really bike that sketchy path all the way down, we saw you from the lift and no way a girl was doing it?”

    Uhm well, hold my beer…

    Maybe not the wisest move, but a good test for my real capabilities. And an example of what a girl can do. With the help and pushing of other people, especially women. Because without one particular woman I would not have been in Switzerland in the first place that summer. And without the women biking before me I would not have ever gotten on bike and realised I can do things like this as well.

    Though this summer I hope I have enough money to buy a new bike. Enough of testing my capabilities exactly this way.

  • Theme of 2019 – Wellness

    It’s been pretty few days, with the snow eventually coming, in loads. I’ve fought the urge to go skiing – yes I said loads and it would be so fluffy in Eastern Switzerland and Austria– as there is a lot to do and plan and rest these days. And more than else rest. For my theme of 2019 will be wellness, I just decided. Rest included.

    Wellness. The new luxury. The kind of wellness (from my personal point of view) where you carefully consider what you need to feel good, do good and be good. And then, you do that, get that and make that. Simple as that. Or maybe not.

    And to help with this simple or not so simple thing, I listed down few things I am going to focus on more carefully this year. Here you go:

    Food – More veggies, less processed food. I’m not into taking any extra stress nor spending a lot of time and energy thinking food, but I do try to eat and drink more of what keeps me healthy, makes me feel good and what tastes good. Going vegan would be trendy, yet I will just try to eat a bit better. For myself and the planet. In 2019 happy and wellbeing me me will also continue to be Arctic Warrior ambassador, so the superfoods are guaranteed and maybe some more tips coming up in the blog too.

    Love – Not going into detail in here, but 2019 I will continue on the path I chose in 2018. Which is about being grateful for what one has and to not take anything for granted. By now I also know how one has to work (hard) for the best things too. When one works hard with a good focus, knowing what one wants, it most likely leads to something very good. And what’s better than as much love as possible?

    Work – Funnily enough, in 2019 I want to do more and I want to do better. Especially professionally. I want to use my skills and knowledge to make a change,  but I also wanna challenge myself, gain new skills and strengthen the already existing ones. And yes, I also want to have (more) work to get money to pay the rent and support the wellness goals.

    Wellbeing (physically and mentally) – Health is wealth and for me (though I do think this goes to everyone – humans were made to move and do things with their whole body) physical activity, especially outdoors is what keeps me going in a good way and which keeps my body and mind feeling and being well. For me, it’s a way to train the body but also to disconnect from all the hustle and puzzle of modern everyday life, to focus fully on the trail ahead, the snow under my skis and the mountains to conquer. Preferably followed by some yoga, sauna and spa time. And good long sleep.

    Travel – As a tourism researcher from my education, I do acknowledge the good effects of good travel. For wellbeing as well. And this year again, I want to travel and travel good  – gain as many transformative experiences as possible, see new places and step out of my comfort zone – but also to travel to feel absolutely, totally, extremely comfortable.

    So please 2019, show me as many outdoor adventures, spa hotels and foreign places as possible.

    Finnish sauna. Almost everyone in this country has one and even though the nuances are varied, the basic concept could almost be found in our constitution.  Tiina Kivelä

    It’s a funny concept — you warm it hot (80°C is about right), get naked, go in, sit (or lay) and sweat there for some time (15mins is about right), silent. And throw some water to the stones constantly. Then you scrub your skin with something, or beat yourself with a birch whisk (don’t ask), and sit silent for some more minutes. Further on, you go out, jump into an ice cold water or if the season is right, snow, and curl there for some seconds, get back in, sweat some more, and shower.

    Then you take your bathrobe and an ice cold beer, go out to cool down for few minutes and take another set of silent moments. Finally, you come to the conclusion that life isn’t so bad after all. With perfect skin.

    That’s Finnish sauna, my favorite, almost daily, wellness ritual. And a very good excuse to close off rest of the world for a moment.

    For Finnish sauna, you don’t have to stay in or come to Finland though. When traveling, it’s always interesting, and rewarding, to find sauna, especially if it’s labeled “Finnish”, and test enjoy it. To see what the prefix Finnish means with each case; if it’s hot, humid and minimalistic as the best ones, or if it’s just good enough. And then I just sit there quiet for a while, letting the body and mind relax.

    I’ll add few good sauna finds below, around Europe. And if you know a nice one, which you think I should definitely try, please tell me or invite me over. If it’s close snowy mountains, or in the middle of busy city, the better.

    Recently, I’ve even started to browse and dream of spa holidays or at least travels including as much spa’s and sauna’s as possible.  Steam sauna’s and hammams, Korean saunas and so on. Traveling with a tight budget, as I normally do, creates stress for which spas and saunas offer nice remedy. Almost as good as a long sleep in comfy king size hotel bed.

    In Finland, finding sauna for the everyday stress relief is pretty easy, and one of the best perks of Finland is definitely the saunas even in the smallest urban flats. In few weeks, when finally moving to a new flat after months of homelessness, I’ll even get a tiny home sauna myself. And for that personal “spa”, and since my skin is screaming “woman why did you bring me back to this hell called dry Finnish winter air!”, and hair is screaming “come on woman, you can’t run with me from the -20°C directly to the +80°C sauna without consequences“, I’m also updating my wellness self-help kit, starting with Aésop in pictures (they came wrapped in that cute paper, ordered from their own webshop). It’s high-end, a bit expensive, and not as eco as I’d really like, but oh boy it will look nice in my shelves, next to sauna.

    And hopefully they make my skin scream less.
