  • Just A Perfect MTB Day: Grindelwald

    Tiina Kivelä

Once up a time a silly idea in Grindelwald.

This sunny morning in Interlaken, I loaded my bike (and myself) to the train towards Grindelwald (tip: buy a day bike pass from SBB & hang your bike by the hooks in bike carriage). Having in mind a long MTB tour up to Grosse Scheidegg, Bachalpsee and back to Grindelwald.

When I arrived in Grindelwald, I noticed that in my excitement (perfect weather) I had forgotten to pack my sunnies, and so I started the tour buying the first “good enough” (and expensive) pair I found in one of the shops in Grindelwald. I had been thinking of buying new – alpine environment suitable – pair for some time already, though with enough time to consider and test. Nevertheless, that day I didn’t  want to waste too much time indoors since the weather was perfect and my goal was high. And so I loaded the money on the table and headed up.

Thanking lord that there’s still good gear retailers offline too.

    MTB AROUND GRINDELWALD

And so I went with my bike & my new shades, up up. Which really wasn’t easy with my heavy bike not really made for this kind of tours. Nevertheless, bad gear builds character or something like that, and so I went.

First to Grosse Scheidegg along the narrow road only open for busses and bikes. Then, after a little beer break, to First and Bachalpsee (dipped my feet in, of course) and finally down along some winding and bit scary singletrails.

I can’t really say I’m a master on bike, nor that today’s trip would have been easy, but still this was one of the best days in my life. I made it, safe and sound, and the views and the weather… No words to describe how awesome it was. Hope these pics talk a bit more though.

    TOUR TIPS

You may skip the first part from Grindelwald to Grosse Scheidegg (it’s really better with road bike) by taking a PostAuto, which offers bike transport too (for a little price before, and free after 4pm).

Some of the trails you have to share with hikers and on some trails biking is prohibited during the high season in summer.

Follow the red biking signs and ask for more information in one of the bike shops in Grindelwald, where guiding is also offered.

  • Play It Cool In Lauterbrunnen

Tested this today and it takes appr. 1h to bike from home (Interlaken) to Lauterbrunnen. The village and the valley is THE base jumping location, therefore also known as Death Valley. But base jumping aside, the valley and villages around and above offer amazing (and dramatic) background for many other activities too.

Play it tourist: see the 72 waterfalls and take the cablecar up to Schilthorn.

Play it biker: bike (or take the train / cablecar) up to Wengen. Winteregg, Mürren or my favorite (that little cute alpine hippie village) Gimmelwald. Choose your path and try to keep your eye on the road and not on the marvelous mountaintops, glaciers, gliffs, goats, chalets  (mission impossible for me and therefore I take lots of breaks while up).

Play it hiker: hike (or take the train / cablecar) up to Wenger, Winteregg, Mürren, Gimmelwald… Hike a hour, two or whole day, find a hütte or hotel and take a beer.

Play it cool: bike the main road in Lauterbrunnen, past all the cafés and try to look as pro as possible.

Today I played the biker; took my bike up to Lauterbrunnen, then Winteregg and past carless Mürren and Gimmelwald back down to Lauterbrunnen and home. It was hot, it was tough, but it was all worth it.

Now I dream of 5-star hotel sheets and fondue dinner (yes, still no holiday in sight before September) but seems like I have to be happy with homemade pasta and H&M sheets. Which of course is more than fine too.
