    Hundshorn Swiss Alps Tiina Kivelä

Good days like last Saturday start with a message in the middle of the night: remember the ice axe! And then they continue with the following recipe:

    Where: Hundshorn 2928 m.ü.M.

First, take the train from Interlaken to Lauterbrunnen and change there to the Grütschalpbahn cableway. Then at Grütschalp change to the train to Mürren, from where you should take the cable car up to Schilthorn and follow the ridge to Hundshorn. On your way, you get a nice alpine panorama from the train, and you may also spot Mont Blanc when up if and when the weather is as good as it was for us.

But remember the ice axe, when December. Crampons are also good idea. And the most important ingredience: good compay.

    Allons!

  • Last Hours Of Summer And USB Mountain Offer

    Lauterbrunnen by Tiina Kivelä

Don’t make the mountain your enemy – get out, get up there instead

It’s the last weekend of summer time and UBS mountain offer, and what a weather to take full advantage of! Though today I kind of needed to sleep long and therefore in the end took the right turn, opposite to the initial plan to reach Schilthorn on time for the last cable car down (left turn, and then from the “back side” to the summit).

But like the mountain rule goes, rather turn back in the last minute, than not come back at all. So there I was, enjoying views, the work out, the sun, the inversion(it’s been extremely warm & sunny these days, for October at least), the silence (though Florence jukebox inside my head) and cheap cable cars down to save my knees.

It’s about a time to earn my next winter turns and work my body these weekends, though I have to say that if the weather wouldn’t have been this great, I’d kick started the downdays of November in Berner Weinmesse or in Helsinki. But luckily the weather offered something even better. Have to earn that wine too, you see.

And November will come, no matter what.

  • Play It Cool In Lauterbrunnen

Tested this today and it takes appr. 1h to bike from home (Interlaken) to Lauterbrunnen. The village and the valley is THE base jumping location, therefore also known as Death Valley. But base jumping aside, the valley and villages around and above offer amazing (and dramatic) background for many other activities too.

Play it tourist: see the 72 waterfalls and take the cablecar up to Schilthorn.

Play it biker: bike (or take the train / cablecar) up to Wengen. Winteregg, Mürren or my favorite (that little cute alpine hippie village) Gimmelwald. Choose your path and try to keep your eye on the road and not on the marvelous mountaintops, glaciers, gliffs, goats, chalets  (mission impossible for me and therefore I take lots of breaks while up).

Play it hiker: hike (or take the train / cablecar) up to Wenger, Winteregg, Mürren, Gimmelwald… Hike a hour, two or whole day, find a hütte or hotel and take a beer.

Play it cool: bike the main road in Lauterbrunnen, past all the cafés and try to look as pro as possible.

Today I played the biker; took my bike up to Lauterbrunnen, then Winteregg and past carless Mürren and Gimmelwald back down to Lauterbrunnen and home. It was hot, it was tough, but it was all worth it.

Now I dream of 5-star hotel sheets and fondue dinner (yes, still no holiday in sight before September) but seems like I have to be happy with homemade pasta and H&M sheets. Which of course is more than fine too.
