    In our series of if I would be a foodie blogger. Includes a recipe and guest starring Minttu.

    First of all, I just realised in Switzerland I eat way more veggies than in Finland. That because they are most of the times local – or almost local – and so good quality. (Poor short cold summers of Lapland).  And because meat is so expensive in here. Which it also should be, of course. For the climate, sustainable production and business.

    Though not even that has turned me into fully vegan. And even though tempting – again the climate – I guess it will take time for me to get fully vegan. Though not for the meat – the least for that really. Mainly because the Swiss cheese. I mean, what would life be without apéro-plättli and raclette… And käseschnitte!  (Ask and I may write more of those some day). Luckily though, the cows in Switzerland seem more than happy with their life and duties.

    Secondly, in our rare food section. Raw, soaked oats and Finnish berry powders. <3 Oh why only recently I got this greatness. Healthy and handy.

    (At this point I have to tell you that especially in Switzerland  I am kinda strange Finn abroad because I don’t miss many Finnish/Lapland things. Like, I don’t travel here from Finland with bags full of Finnish bread and candies and whatever many other fellow Finns seem to do. Simply, because I am lazy and have too much stuff anyway. And because Swiss food is generally more than good for me.

    Nevertheless, in addition to the fish and flatbread baked by my dad (aka the original hipster) I do miss the berries a lot. Because they taste good and are super healthy.  The original superfood from Lapland. And while one gets some berry jams from here too – even cloudberry jam from Ikea – and while fresh berries are kinda impossible to transport to Switzerland to be enjoyed later (especially with our tiny tiny freezer)  I am super happy for the recent commercialised invention of berry powders. 100% berries, light to fly with, and easy to storage and be consumed regularly until the jar is finished and new order has to be made – thank god one can nowadays buy them online too.)

    Lately, I have been the most excited of that shock dark pink of Arctic Warrior’s Puolu lingonberry powder. Which goes well mixed with frozen bananas and coconut milk – for banana-coconut-lingonberry nice cream –  and for the above mentioned raw soaked oats porridge.

    (For mine, I normally mix together a small handful of big oat flakes, a bit of chia seeds, spoonful of lingonberry powder, just enough unsweetened almond or coconut milk, and one ripe banana. Then I let it stay in the fridge over the night in the very hipster jar and eat it in the morning – raw or occasionally topped with almonds/nuts, more berry powder and coconut flakes.)

    And to get it all balanced, see the last pic for todays most interesting find and our guess star Minttu.

    Was today sorting my skiing and mountaineering stuff aka my favourite toys and next to my harness – which I have  used way too little lately – I found a bottle of Minttu. The notorious Finnish drink which goes well as a shot or extremely well with hot chocolate (or at least to the ones who like boozy mint chocolate) and which for some reason – didn’t remember it first – I had in there.

    Though then, I remembered la graving and the concept of survival shot. (For the nerves, that is. )

    Seemingly though I have not needed it, because the bottle’s still unopened. Which only means that the harness and crampons and me need more outings. The bit scary kinda ones, for which one needs all kind of shots in the emergency kit (btw, above mentioned Arctic Warriors also makes my favourite natural energy shots – these honey ones) in addition to the crampons and glacier specs.

    Time to eat tomorrows porridge looking maps and project sheets….

    Most of us have seen the pics. The hut, nestled tightly against and under the mountain face. And the lake, reflecting the surrounding mountains, so green in the summer and so white in the winter. And so many of us have gone there, even me. Or, well, close enough.

    It’s Appenzell, or more precisely the Berggasthaus Aescher-Wildkirchli and the lake Seealpsee, and the mountain Säntis above them. A few weeks back we were skiing close by, in the Ebenalp, when it really hit me. Instagram brought us all there. Me, us and most of the people in the mountain restaurant. Without hashtag, we or the places don’t exist.

    Well, Instafamous or not, Appenzell is a very nice region, with nice small ski resorts in the Alpstein massif (pro tip: t-lifts are always a good sign) and very nice local products; Appenzeller beer, cheese and whisky. And whisky trek! So why not to love? And why not go there in summer, when you’ll most likely see my version of the most famous pics too. And get some more (whisky) hiking tips.

    Until that, let’s enjoy the food and drinks.

    Or go voting. Soon it’s time for a very Swiss tradition in the town of Appenzell, the Landsgemeinde, which is the original form of the famous Swiss direct democracy. On the last Sunday in April the citizens entitled to vote gather to the square, under the open sky, to elect their government and courts, and to decide about laws and financial matters.

    These days this form of direct democracy is possible only in the smaller areas though, and yes, Appenzell is one of them. Cheers for democracy!

    I spent last weekend in Helsinki, meeting friends, tasting wine and browsing books. It was very snowy the first day – of course I bring snow with me – then it was very rainy – perfect reason to spent day in hotel bed – and all in all, it was an ok weekend. Helsinki isn’t my favorite city, quite the opposite, but it works well enough for short visits like this.  And why wouldn’t it, for that price…

    And an ok trip can give a lot too. Here’s my takeout from the weekend, in random order. Contains  references to wine, coffee, cheese, literature, personal history and struggles, and athleisure. Like any good trip.

    Helsinki Lessons

    • It could be Girl of the North Country – but I’m not changing the title right away.
    • New Zealand makes excellent sparkling, champagne method – until now I’ve been mostly Marlborough pinot noir & sauvignon blanc kinda girl, but now I have bubbly for the holiday season too – by Lindauer.
    • I remember drinking Spy Valley Riesling somewhere in good company and I’m pretty sure it had something to do with Stockholm and one American… It was good then and it was good this weekend too.
    • The best strangers remember your jewelry, even if and when they don’t sparkle like diamonds – greetings to the Vinum guys, for remembering and for the excellent wine and service.
    • There is a difference between 4 CHF Swiss pinot noir, 20€ Californian pinot noir and 50€ Californian pinot noir. I really wish I could afford the last more often. And accompany it with a road trip and surfing in California. Lucienne, you took my heart.
    • Swiss gruyere is still the best cheese ever – and Italian truffle pasta is an excellent invention as well.
    • Vegan cook books and self help for women are so trendy, when it comes to literature – while I stick to Tove Jansson – she  was an awesome writer, artist and I can easily resonate with her thoughts and writings, especially when it comes to traveling and human nature (and I like the fact that she’s illustrated a version of Hobbit, which has literary references to my Swiss home region too
    • Helsinki weather sucks. Therefore, you should go really north or stay south. Leave Slush for people trying hard to be cool (while they could come North and see how authentic cool looks like) or enjoy the sun for me too.
    • I should use hotel gyms more often. I don’t really like going to a gym, but I don’t travel enough to get bored in hotel gyms. And if and when the Helsinki weather, gym is better than run.
    • Deat Poet is an excellent drink (and suits literary theme of early winter / holiday season) but so is El Matador as well – both from Chapter.
    • Understanding which ticket to buy to Helsinki City Centre from Helsinki Airport is impossible. Though, with more time and energy, it could be made as an extreme sport. How to not get lost or not get fined for traveling in Finland.
    • If you have the time and energy, go and get your coffee in Helsinki Airport from Johan & Nyström, even if it’s far from your gate – it will be as expensive as coffee generally is in Helsinki Airport (it’s HEL for a reason, it seems – though a very beautiful hell), but it’s definitely worth the money and effort, compared to others in there –  and it also gives you a nice opportunity and reason, if you even need one, for a  little workout between flights – but watch out for the crowds and toilet lines, which makes being on time and surviving the journey without a bruise kind of an a challenge.

    In other words, Helsinki is not a leisure destination. It’s an extreme resort. Cheer’s for that.

    I’m now back to North, where it’s snow and around -15°C . That calls for Nordic skiing and sauna after work. Writing and pics will follow. And like always something is already in here and here.
