There are good friends. And then there are very good friends. Who ask “You wanna go for a helicopter ride?” on a Sunday morning. And off we went. Me tired from Saturday’s hike; from Wengen along the famous downhill slope to Laubernhorn and from there to a traditional hiker lunch at Chalet Eiger Nordwand (melted cheese – so simple and so good!) in Kleine Scheideggen, then up to Männlichen, cable car down to Grindelwald and after hike beer while watching the town buzzing of Eiger Bike Challenge in the August heat wave.

    HIGH LIFE HELICOPTER STYLE

All this hiking and the heat has had me planning a lazy beach day for the Sunday, but since you can’t say no to offers like “do you wanna fly today” I soon found myself up in over 4000, with views as good as Mont Blanc.Have to say – skydiving is one the most interesting jobs one can have, and maybe one day I make my down with only a parachute myself. But not yet – today I just enjoyed the ride and was safe and sound with Swiss Helicopters.

After the ride and with the help of the adrenaline rush, I decided to continue enjoying the amazing weather to the fullest and rode my bike (heavy mountain bike – not the best option for bitumi and tunnels and scenic roads really, but a very good exercise machine) to Merligen, where they have this amazing infinity pool by Lake Thun. I even found a Wellness & Spa Hotel Beatus, which seems to offer saunas I often dream about. Next staycation destination maybe ? Changing the mtb to road bike or Fiat 500 and a little drive for a evening swin, sauna, sunset dinner, good night sleep and champagne breakfast by the lake….  .

What this weekend proved is that for a perfect holiday one don’t need to travel far from home, if and when one happens to live in the Bernese Oberland and especially the Jungfrau Region. This was an amazing weekend I can highly recommend my home for your active relaxing holiday too. More detailed tips when asked.

    Take care!

  • Just A Perfect MTB Day: Grindelwald

    Tiina Kivelä

Once up a time a silly idea in Grindelwald.

This sunny morning in Interlaken, I loaded my bike (and myself) to the train towards Grindelwald (tip: buy a day bike pass from SBB & hang your bike by the hooks in bike carriage). Having in mind a long MTB tour up to Grosse Scheidegg, Bachalpsee and back to Grindelwald.

When I arrived in Grindelwald, I noticed that in my excitement (perfect weather) I had forgotten to pack my sunnies, and so I started the tour buying the first “good enough” (and expensive) pair I found in one of the shops in Grindelwald. I had been thinking of buying new – alpine environment suitable – pair for some time already, though with enough time to consider and test. Nevertheless, that day I didn’t  want to waste too much time indoors since the weather was perfect and my goal was high. And so I loaded the money on the table and headed up.

Thanking lord that there’s still good gear retailers offline too.

    MTB AROUND GRINDELWALD

And so I went with my bike & my new shades, up up. Which really wasn’t easy with my heavy bike not really made for this kind of tours. Nevertheless, bad gear builds character or something like that, and so I went.

First to Grosse Scheidegg along the narrow road only open for busses and bikes. Then, after a little beer break, to First and Bachalpsee (dipped my feet in, of course) and finally down along some winding and bit scary singletrails.

I can’t really say I’m a master on bike, nor that today’s trip would have been easy, but still this was one of the best days in my life. I made it, safe and sound, and the views and the weather… No words to describe how awesome it was. Hope these pics talk a bit more though.

    TOUR TIPS

You may skip the first part from Grindelwald to Grosse Scheidegg (it’s really better with road bike) by taking a PostAuto, which offers bike transport too (for a little price before, and free after 4pm).

Some of the trails you have to share with hikers and on some trails biking is prohibited during the high season in summer.

Follow the red biking signs and ask for more information in one of the bike shops in Grindelwald, where guiding is also offered.

When the clouds are hanging below 2000m a.s.l. it’s an interesting idea to climb (in a cogwheel railway) high up to 1967m a. s. l. Everything becomes dreamy like – you’re head’s in the clouds, literally.

So that was Schynige Platte today. No majestetic views I’ve heard of, nor marmots, but lot’s of tourists, families and a cute dog. I guess this is the tourist place and almost perfect place for hiking with kids and oldies, but I wasn’t as impressed as I was on Eiger Trail. I guess I’m just for more extreme, more challenges. And less tourists. Especially now when I can call myself local here, eh.

But I have to say there’s something in these dreamy landscapes still.
